"Sankofa Seas" explores the intersection of data materiality and cultural memory through an immersive audiovisual installation. Drawing from the Akan concept of Sankofa—reaching back to move forward—this work examines how digital technologies can mediate personal and collective histories. The installation reinterprets traditional Ekombi dance through computational processes, creating a dialogue between ancestral knowledge systems and contemporary data visualization practices.

The installation employs custom Python scripts and TouchDesigner to create a data ecosystem, merging environmental data from the Gulf of Guinea with recorded sound bath frequencies. Marine weather patterns are transformed into visual abstractions that interact with digitized Ekombi dance movements. This techno-vernacular approach weaves a narrative exploring diaspora, data embodiment, and cultural preservation through computational media, questioning how traditional practices can be recontextualized via digital interfaces while preserving their cultural significance.
