Rhythmic Wave 1.5, presented at The Music Center through Umoh’s residency with the Royal Shakespeare Company, is set in the year 5054. The immersive three-channel performance invited audiences to enter the story as ancestors guiding Idara, a dancer and creative technologist searching for the first clue to restoring culture. Umoh used motion capture to teach her avatar traditional African dance, with the avatar’s digital costume designed and created by Sade. She then performed as Idara in a live duet with the avatar against lush Afrofuturist virtual worlds built using Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner. Nigerian greeting call-and-response activated the environment in real time and guided Idara. Upon returning to 2025, audiences contributed memories to a Living Archive, transforming the performance into a collective act of cultural preservation.
